Save on your health insurance by reviewing your policy excess
This is an exerpt from today's Irish Times. The full article can be found here http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/pricewatch/2012/0206/1224311325351.html?via=mr
"If someone is happy to take on an excess for in-patient care in the private and high-tech hospitals and is willing to cover a €2,000 shortfall should they need certain orthopaedic procedures, then they will be able to see the cost of a policy fall from more than €1,400 to around €800 a year, Brennan says.
He gives another example of an even greater saving that can be made. The VHI’s Forward Plan Level 2 offers money back on GP visits costs a pretty hefty €2,055 for an adult. That same level of cover, albeit with a requirement to pay the first €2,000 for orthopaedic care and an in-patient excess for day cases and overnights in private hospitals of €75, is available with Aviva for €974. A couple taking out such a policy will save over €2,100 in a single year – or the cost of the orthopaedic shortfall (which may never be needed once your joints are in good shape) in just 12 months.
“I think it is important that people remember they may never have to pay an excess. Today the message is all about how crazy the prices are but there is still good value to be found if you know where to look.”

How to protect your home from flooding
We are experiencing increased incidents of flash flooding and prolonged rainfall,
which can cause major damage to an unprotected home.
1. Visually check the roof of your home for any damage and or missing slates and flashings. Flat roofs are particularly vulnerable to damage.
2. With roof coverings where you have any concern, have them inspected by a professional and arrange for repairs or replacement where necessary.
3. Keep all gutters, drainpipes and gullies around your home clear of leaves and other debris. This will prevent any water build-up allowing water to flow away quickly.
4. If you live in a flood prone area you need to;
·
Check what contingency plans your Local Authority has in place.
·
Be aware of any local flood warnings and evacuation procedures.
·
Get to know the contact numbers of your local emergency services.
·
Consider providing flood barriers to all ground floor openings including
below ground floor air vents. It may be necessary to fit barriers across
gateways or openings in boundary walls.
·
Consider fitting non-return valves on underground drains & sewers.
·
Have access to sandbags for emergency use.
·
Consider installing intervening walls or banks.
5. If flooding is inevitable, there are basic steps you can take
(but only if it is safe for you
do
so)
·
Move possessions to an upstairs location or safely stack them.
·
Unplug electrical appliances and turn off electrical power.
·
Turn off water supplies at the mains.
6. When water subsides;
·
Remove and dry out any damaged floor coverings and possessions.
·
Proceed with any emergency repairs that help minimise damage.
·
Have the electrical system checked for safety

Our South Mall office celebrated its 20th anniversary this afternoon. Unfortunately our first South Mall employee, Sean O'Riordan had to join the festivities by telephone, so the photo above shows Cormac Cahil cutting the cake on his behalf. The office which was the second office the group opened outside of Fermoy at the time, has grown from four employees in 1991 to over 40 in 2011, while the group now has 12 local offices all over Munster and in Dublin.

McCarthy Insurance Group proudly sponsor Employer Awareness Event
There’s no better time than now to recognise diversity as a key contributor to business success, was the clear message to over 150 Cork employers at last night’s Employer Awareness Event hosted by Fás funded Employability Services Cork and McCarthy Insurance Group in Silver Springs.
The
evening offered local employers the opportunity to explore best practice in the inclusion of people with diverse needs in the workplace. Kathleen Lynch TD, Minister of State with responsibility for Disability, Equality and Mental Health officially launched the event and said “In the current difficult economic climate we must create a more inclusive labour market in order to strengthen Ireland’s future economic and social growth and provide opportunities for the unemployed and marginalized groups including people with disabilities”.
The event was proudly sponsored by McCarthy Insurance Group. Group Product Development Manager Peter Kirwan spoke to the gathering on how employing people with disabilities does not affect a company’s insurance and how the group with its focus on local service through its network of offices is an expert on insuring all companies, including not for profit, charities and community organisations.
As a non- profit organisation, over the past 10 years Fás funded Employability Services Cork has worked directly with over 600 employers from multinationals to sole traders, providing advice and information on recruiting, retaining and supporting employees with a disability or long term illness.
Also in attendance on the night were representatives from IBEC, Cork Chamber of Commerce, Quintas, Cork Business Association, Heineken Ireland, Stryker, Kepak, Fota Island Resort, IITD Southern Chapter, Kanchi, Fás Services to Business, Local Employment Service, National Learning Network, PWDI, Shine and IASE.

McCarthy Insurance Group (MIG) launched a new prepaid MasterCard® today, in association with Irish company Rubycard.
The Rubycard has all the flexibility of a MasterCard without any of the worries – order your card, top it up like mobile phone credit and use it in any of the 29 million locations worldwide where you see the MasterCard acceptance mark.
Card holders have total control over their spending. The card also entitles the insurance broker’s clients to a range of special offers and savings, including a €12 per person saving per return flight booked with Ryanair as MIG Rubycard prepaid MasterCard customers do not have to pay the booking fee.
The partnership will also benefit Irish Dogs for the Disabled. This pioneering charity, of whom BBC television presenter Graham Norton is a patron, trains specially selected dogs to carry out a range of practical tasks to assist disabled children and adults in order to achieve greater independence.
McCarthy Insurance Group chairman Charles McCarthy said: “We’re very excited about this project; we believe it will be a winning combination, which benefits Irish Dogs for the Disabled and our 60,000 loyal clients.”
McCarthy Insurance Group clients can purchase the card for €9.99 online at www.mig.ie or in one of the group’s 14 local offices.
The card was launched today by Minister for Agriculture, Food and Marine, Simon Coveney TD, and Jennifer Dowler of Irish Dogs for the Disabled.
Minister Coveney said “I’m delighted to be involved with McCarthy Insurance Group in their endeavours to encourage local business and as a dog lover and the husband of a dog lover, I’m very pleased with the Irish Dogs for the Disabled partnership”.
Jennifer Dowler from the charity commented “It costs in the region of €12,000 to train and support an assistance dog for life. We are a relatively young charity and we rely entirely on donations to carry out our work."
